We made it, guys. It’s Election Day 2024. Today, I’m reminded of the diverse beliefs and values that shape our country and communities. Law enforcement has traditionally been viewed as aligned with conservative ideals, but as we look to the future, it’s essential to move beyond this notion. To truly fulfill our mission, officers must embrace a balanced and impartial approach that transcends political affiliation. Our role is to protect and serve all citizens, regardless of their views. Only with this commitment can we begin to reimagine policing and repair the strained relationships between officers and the communities we serve.
Embracing Neutrality to Rebuild Trust
In recent years, the relationship between law enforcement and the public has been challenged, often divided along ideological lines. To bridge this gap, law enforcement must step away from political perceptions and actively pursue a balanced, impartial stance. As police officers, our duty is to serve every individual in our community, not to represent any political side. By remaining neutral, we can ensure our work is seen as fair, reliable, and rooted in service—not politics.
Throughout my career, I’ve held to the belief that law enforcement’s commitment is to people, not ideologies. Our mission is to uphold the law, safeguard public safety, and foster trust, and we achieve this by treating every individual with dignity and respect. “Who you have been with your beliefs is zero indication of who you’re capable of becoming” is something I often say, and it applies to policing as well. Our profession must be defined by fairness, impartiality, and commitment to serve equally. By embodying these values, we can begin to heal past divides and show our communities that law enforcement is a true partner, not a political force.
Living Up to Society’s Expectations
Our communities expect law enforcement officers to meet high standards—not only in how they serve but also in their personal conduct, fitness, and education. Society’s expectations have evolved, demanding officers who are not only physically prepared but also knowledgeable, culturally aware, and emotionally intelligent. Yet, this shift is a difficult ask for many who have spent years entrenched in traditional law enforcement culture, where physical and educational standards may not always align with public expectations.
For example, while physical fitness is crucial for officers to handle intense situations, studies show that many police departments lack consistent, ongoing fitness requirements. A report by the Police Executive Research Forum found that fewer than half of U.S. police departments require regular physical fitness testing after academy graduation. This discrepancy can erode public confidence, as communities expect officers to be physically capable and prepared.
Education is another essential expectation. According to a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, only about 15 percent of police departments have some type of college requirement for recruits, with just 10 percent requiring a two-year degree and a mere 1 percent mandating a four-year degree. Yet, research consistently shows that officers with higher education are linked to a reduction in use-of-force incidents and an increase in community trust. Meeting these expectations isn’t merely about appearances; it’s about earning and sustaining the public’s trust by embodying the values of a modern and professional police force. Officers who are educated, physically prepared, and culturally aware help restore faith in law enforcement, demonstrating a commitment to both personal and professional excellence.
True trust cannot be built without open and honest communication, especially with those who feel disconnected from law enforcement. When officers take the time to listen to their communities, they open the door to understanding and cooperation. This commitment to transparency is essential. By fostering meaningful conversations, we can clarify our role, address concerns, and demonstrate our dedication to the safety and well-being of all citizens.
A Vision for the Future: A Reimagined Role of Law Enforcement
The future of law enforcement lies in embracing a neutral, service-centered approach that reinforces our commitment to safety and justice above any political affiliation. Police officers should represent stability and impartiality, focused solely on protecting and serving the public. Our role is not to be a symbol of political loyalty but to serve as guardians of public safety for everyone. By positioning ourselves as truly nonpartisan, we can dismantle long-standing barriers and move toward a united vision of public safety.
As the nation heads to the polls, let’s remember that law enforcement’s purpose is not to pick sides but to protect everyone. By embracing a balanced, impartial approach and striving to meet society’s expectations, we can help heal past divides and work toward a safer, more inclusive future. Our loyalty is, and must always be, to the people—every one of them—regardless of their beliefs, background, or political stance.
And today, if you haven’t already, get out and vote. Even if no candidate feels like the perfect choice, remember that voting is a duty, a fundamental part of being an American. Let’s each do our part to shape the future of our nation, and I will continue with my work to strive to shape the future of law enforcement.
